Lairg is conveniently located for enjoying the Northern Highlands of Scotland. Situated at the 'crossroads' of the highlands, it offers easy access to the North, South, East or West on often deserted roads.
There is excellent road access and also a rail link to Inverness and Wick/Thurso with a station in the village. If you prefer to fly, the nearest airport is close to Inverness (55 miles away).
Lairg has a handful of well stocked shops, The Pier cafe (now taking bookings online) and restaurant by the lochside, a hotel, bar, a Fish & Chip Shop and other amenities including a tourist information office, petrol station, doctor's surgery and pharmacy. Close by, Shin Falls provides the opportunity to watch Salmon leap as they head upstream.
Loch Shin, which can be seen from the cottage, offers sailing and fishing. Boat hire is available locally.
The village caters for most needs, and the towns of Alness, Tain, Golspie, Dingwall and Dornoch, as well as the city of Inverness, are within easy reach by car, train, and bus.
Supermarkets who offer home deliveries directly to Benmore Cottage, or to the village centre, are Tesco and Asda.
A 'claim to fame' for the village is that Lairg is considered the site of a huge meteor collision 1.2 Billion years ago, read here.
